Cyla Lindenberg Kahane

Frances Cutler remembers her mother Cyla Lindenberg Kahane, who was born in Ciechanow, Poland, but immigrated to France in 1936. In 1942, she was deported to Auschwitz, where she died, pregnant with another child. She had been able to hide her young daughter Frances from the Nazi authorities and French collaborators. Cutler noted that “I believed she loved me dearly, and she did everything she could to save me, and that her love and my father’s love sustained me through difficult times.” Cyla’s death was “devastating” to Cutler, and she has spent much of her life learning how to live after losing her mother while only four years old.
