Rachel Olsky

Sally Wolkoff honors her sister Rachel Olksy, who was born in Pabianice, Poland, around 1919. Along with three of her sisters, she survived her imprisonment at Mauthausen. Rachel spent much of her imprisonment with her younger sister Bala, and the two worked the night shift in a slave labor camp that constructed airplanes. Two weeks before the war ended in 1945, Rachel had a baby on the train from Freiberg to Mauthausan. The child survived, and grew up to be a physician. Rachel eventually married and moved to Nashville, where she was known for her hospitality, intelligence, and kindness.
