Selma Katz Simon

Susan Berman honors her maternal grandmother Selman Katz Simon, who was born in Arolsen, Germany, in 1894. The mother of four daughters, she was faced with the difficult decision of selecting only two to be sent to England in 1938 on the Kindertransport. The other two daughters would leave Europe on the St. Louis with their parents, only to be sent back to Holland. Of these two girls, one would survive and the other, Ilse, did not. Both Selma Katz Simon and her husband Karl (as well as Ilse) would eventually be sent to Westerbork Labor Camp and then on to Sorbibor Concentration Camp in Poland, where they died.
