Moses Lewin

Susan Levy and Moshe Lewin honor their grandfather Moses Simcha Lewin, who lived in Brody, Poland. Brody was a large and important city in pre-war Poland, a trading center with a large and vibrant Jewish community. Lewin was one of the leaders of his synagogue, of which there were many. He owned a business which involved trading through Europe. His grandson Moshe Lewin notes that Moses Lewin was “in hiding for several years in a succession of homes belonging to non-Jews….Our grandfather had reached the point that he could no longer bear the stress and conditions of continuing in hiding and his health was failing. He and his wife left the hideout knowing that they would be caught within a very short time and shot, which is what happened.” Moses Lewin died in the fall of 1944.
