Eva Ruth L. Rosenfeld

Eva Rosenfeld was born in 1927 in Konigsberg, East Prussia, Germany, which is now Russian territory. Her family moved to Italy, but her mother soon died and her father escaped to France in order to make arrangements to save his family. After he was captured and killed at Auschwitz, Eva was an orphan at age thirteen. For awhile, Rosenfeld hid with friends and lived in constant danger on “very meager means.” Her story was unusual, however, as she was one of 982 people that FDR brought over from occupied Italy in August of 1944 “outside of the quota, specified only for the duration of the war….when we got here (to the United States) we were put into an internment camp in Oswego, New York, complete with barbed wire all around.”
