Manfred Heinemann

Susan Berman honors her father Manfred Heinemann, who was born in Treuchlingen, Germany, in 1922, and died in 2001. During Kristallnacht, as a 16-year-old boy, he was beaten up by the SS and kicked in the head. He was sent to Dachau for a number of weeks, but was released when his mother obtained emigration papers for him and presented them to the Gestapo. He, along with his father, was released with the understanding that he would leave Germany as soon as possible. He later joined the U.S. army; he was sent to England and interpreted German documents. Manfred Heinemann was interviewed by Stephen Spielberg’s Shoah project.
