Susan Berman honors her aunt Edith Simon Babich, who was born in 1922 in Cloppenburg, Germany, and died in 2005. The eldest of four daughters, she was the last one to leave Europe for the United States. She had attempted to leave once before, when she was a passenger on the ill-fated St. Louis, which was bound for Cuba but ultimately sent to Holland with all of its passengers still aboard. Edith, unlike her sister Ilse, was able to leave Holland before it was too late. Upon Edith’s death, Susan Berman discovered that Edith had been able to save some of the prayer books that had belonged to her parents, Manfred and Ruth Simon Heinemann.
