Rochelle Talmage honors her grandfather, Bernat Bergida, who was born in Czechoslovakia and died in Auschwitz in 1944. A tailor, he was able to design men’s suits without the use of a pattern. Talmage knows very little about her grandfather, as her mother tried to shield her from the horrors that she had experienced during the Holocaust. No photographs of her grandfather exist; Talmage mourns the fact that she has few surviving relatives and a “great gaping hole in our family history.”
