Frances Cutler remembers her father, Shlomo Zalman Kahane, who had immigrated from Ciechanow, Poland, to Paris, France, around 1936, where he worked as a tailor. He had been wounded while fighting for the resistance, and had been recuperating from tuberculosis in Limel-Brevannes at a sanitarium. Before he died from his illness in 1946 at the age of 36, his daughter Frances had been able to see him twice while he was in the hospital. Shlomo Zalman told his daughter that his aunt would bring her to the United States and would take care of her. In 1948, Cutler moved to America with the help of the HIAS (Hebrew Immigration Aid Society).
