Esther Loeb honors her sister, Regina Stern, who was born in Lodz, Poland, but later moved to a town that was divided between Poles, Germans, and Jews. Both Regina and Esther were abused for being Jewish, a situation that grew worse after Poland was invaded by Germany. Both sisters were subjected to terrible conditions before they fled east to Russia, where they were soon sent to a labor camp in Siberia. There, Regina and Esther made glass bottles and suffered from cold, hunger, and miserable living conditions. Regina survived the war and recently celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary with her husband.
