Libby Salberg honors her mother, who was born in 1917 in Vilna, which was claimed by both Poland and Lithuania after World War I. She survived the Holocaust and World War II, and died in 1984. Salberg remembers that her mother told her that she hid jewelry in her hair, thinking that she could later use it to bribe someone and help her stay alive. She also knows that her mother peeled potatoes while in the work camp. Salberg notes, “My Mom was the central and strong figure in our family. Despite all she went through, she was incredibly optimistic in general.”
