Frida Landau honors her older sister Esther Weiss Schlanger, who was born in Antalovce, Czechoslovakia, in 1913. The sisters were very close, and were always together, even during the Holocaust. They both worked at a slave labor camp near Dresden, and were later sent to Auschwitz. Both Esther and Frida were eventually liberated in Theresienstadt. After the Holocaust, around 1947, they both moved to Nashville, where they both had families and lived near each other in the same neighborhood. Esther Weiss Schlanger died in 2005; Frida remembers her as a good mother and hard worker. Both sisters rarely talked about the Holocaust, as their memories were too painful to revisit.
