Helene Schlanger Rothschild honors her sister Gitel, who was born around 1911 in Czechoslovakia. Not long before World War II broke out, Gitel had a picture taken of herself along with her four daughters. Helene still has the picture, but her sister and four girls were all killed at Auschwitz. Helene remembers her sister as “very lively,” a normal girl who liked to dance. Gitel would wait on customers and help her mother out during the summers at the family’s resort.
