Susan Berman honors her aunt Hilda Simon Gernsheimer, who was born in Oldenburg, Germany, in 1926. She, along with her sister Ruth Simon Heinemann, left Germany for England on the Kindertransport in 1938. They were sheltered in a hostel in Harrogate, England. After staying in England for the remainder of the war, they moved to the United States in 1945. She returned to Germany with family members in 2007. Her home in Cloppenburg was no longer there; a business occupied the space where her home had been. She visited the Jewish cemetery and met an elderly gentleman who had known Karl, her father. He spoke highly of him and indicated that he admired him for his kindness and keen business sense.
