Lee Gryll honors her paternal grandmother Ida Schmidek, who was born in Sanok, Poland, on June 4, 1896, and was killed in July 1942 at Belzec. During her life, she worked as a German teacher; when she became a mother, she devoted all of her time to working as a housewife. She always had a strong belief in education, which was passed down to her son and grandchildren. Schmidek was shot in front of a mass grave in Belzec after she was sent to the Jewish ghettos in Kolbuszowa and Rzeszow.
