Hanna Hamburger has honored her mother’s sister’s husband Joseph Guggenheim, who was from Germany. Known to Hamburger as “Uncle Joe,” and a very nice man with a sense of humor, he had lived in San Francisco, California, for many years. After the earthquake, however, he went back to Germany, got married, and gave up his American citizenship. Hamburger recalls that she saw him when she went to a nearby Jewish school, but after she left, she never saw him again. She notes, “We talked to him about going to the United States but couldn’t convince him. He had one son living in Italy, but had no contact with him. We heard that he was sent to Theresienstadt and died there.”
