Lee Gryll honors her uncle Leon “Leo” Notowicz, who was born in Kolbuszowa, Poland, in 1932 and died at Belzec in July 1942. Along with his mother and older sister, he was taken from the ghettoes in Kolbuszowa and Rzeswo when they were emptied and then transported to Belzec, where he was shot in front of a mass grave. Before his death, he had been working as a student. Leon’s brother Max survived; he later stated that his family had been “unloaded from the train, undressed, marched off into the trenches, and machine-gunned down.” Max Notowicz was the only surviving member of the family.
