Lee Gryll honors her aunt Nina Notowicz, who was born in Kolbuszowa, Poland, in February and died in 1942. Like her mother Ida and brother Leon, she was sent to the ghettoes in Kolbuszowa and Rzeswo before she was taken by transport train to Belzec, where she was shot in front of a mass grave. Like her brother, she had been working as a student before her death. Her brother Max was the only surviving member of the family. He later stated that “I was deprived of the gradual change from childhood to teenager to adulthood….I didn’t exhibit any emotions during the war, but it really came out after liberation when I realized how different my life was from others who had never suffered.”
