Dr. Jerome Klein honors his paternal grandmother, Olga Klein, who was born in Budapest, Hungary. A housewife, Klein was an upper middle-class Jew who lived with her husband, Solomon Klein, a chemist. She had many children, including William, Jerome Klein’s father, and Sandor, who survived Auschwitz, but soon thereafter died of heart disease in Budapest. Jerome Klein’s father, William, left Hungary for the United States shortly after World War I. He was able to start a new life in New York, where he married, worked, and had children. Some of Olga’s other children, including Berta, Lenke, and Aladar, had also left Hungary before the Holocaust. Olga Klein died at Auschwitz sometime between 1942 and 1943.
